The knowledge economy in Belize is not in good shape, though the government and other alliances make continuous efforts for the betterment of education. According to one study done by Belizean government, ‘many children left school before they attend 14 years of age’, the minimum age to make legal drop out from school. The admission in secondary schools is very low. Approximately, 40 percent children who pass out from primary school take admission into secondary schools. The government has built more schools in different districts to increase the number of admission but still the number of students enrolled is significantly low.
The primary education is both free and compulsory. The secondary education is largely employment oriented. Students earn credentials and diplomas as part of secondary education. This gives them better chances to earn a living. The admission into university / college is low because of low income, less availability of scholarships etc. The students hungry for more credentials chose university / college education.
